S&P Global closes OpenZeppelin acquisition to expand digital asset risk assessment
S&P Global said it has completed its acquisition of onchain security firm OpenZeppelin, a deal that was first announced on Sept. 17, 2026. Financial terms were not disclosed. The company said the transaction will add to its digital asset risk assessment business and support both traditional financial institutions and onchain finance companies in evaluating smart contract and underlying technology risks. Founded in 2015, OpenZeppelin provides smart contract security audits, secure development services, and an open-source contract library. Its security team has completed more than 900 audit engagements and identified more than 10,000 vulnerabilities before products went live. The company said OpenZeppelin Contracts has supported more than $38 trillion in cumulative value transferred across major stablecoins and tokenized funds. After the deal, OpenZeppelin will continue to operate as an independent business unit. Founder Demian Brener will remain with the company and report to Yann Le Pallec, president of S&P Global Ratings. OpenZeppelin Contracts will remain open-source, free to use, and publicly maintained.
